
11 June, 1955: he was born at Baone, in the province of Padua, North-Eastern Italy.
1961-75: he attended the normal curriculum of studies in Italy at the time, from primary school to high school, at Este, near Padua. He chooses the classical studies in high school and obtains the classical maturity at Este in 1975, scoring points 57, the top being 60.
1975-79: he attends the Course of Master Degree in Classics at the University of Padua. He successfully gives his 20 examinations at their due times, scoring points 30 cum laude (the top) thirteen times, 30 five times, 29 and 28 one time each.
1979: he obtains the Master Degree, scoring points 110 cum laude (the top), with a thesis on the villa urbana in the de re rustica of Varro.
1979-84: he attends his PhD course in Archaeology at the University of Padua. He successfully gives his examinations, scoring always the top points. He publishes his first articles. Then, he studies and publishes the Roman mosaics of Padua, collaborating also in their display in the local Museum, makes catalogues of monuments for the local
archaeological services, and gains experience of field archaeology in Cividale del Friuli (north-eastern Italy).
1984: he obtains the PhD in Archaeology, scoring points 70 cum laude (the top). Then, he wins a fellowship of the Italian Archaeological School at Athens, moving his residence to Athens, visiting most of the archaeological sites of Greece and Asia Minor, excavating at Gortys (Crete).
1985: he enjoys a long additional period of research at Athens, sponsored by the Italian Archaeological School at Athens. He becomes a member of the British School at Athens.
1985-6: he is appointed to a chair of art history at an Italian high school in Padua . He researches and publishes on Northern Italian monuments in the testimony of Catullus.
1986-7: he wins a scholarship of the Ministry of National Education of Greece, beginning a long residence in Athens.
1988-93: he wins the position of curator of the Archaeological Museum of the University of Padua and works there. He also lectures to the students of the Department of Archaeology of the local University and takes care of theses at the master level. He also lectures for the local Italian Association for Classical Culture. He writes and publishes a
commentary on the three books of the Natural History by Pliny the Elder devoted to the visual arts (books 34, 35 and 36).
1989: he wins a fellowship of the Italian Archaeological School at Athens and returns to Athens.
1990: In January, he gives a successful lecture at the Byzantine Centre of Athens. For the rest of the year, he works as Museum’s curator at Padua.
1991: He wins a fellowship of the German Archaeological Institute at Berlin and moves his residence to Frankfurt/Main. Here, he collaborates with Profs. Bol and von Steuben, attends regularly a course of German language at the local Goethe Institute and finally obtains the Goethe diploma of knowledge of the German language.
1993-6: after his contract at the Museum expired, the Einaudi Publishing House gives him a four year fellowship, in order to allow him to write a critical review of the text, with translation and commentary of the de architecture of Vitruvius. He moves to Athens, where he enjoys membership of the British School at Athens. He lectures at Padua, Trieste, Cologne, London (British Museum), Athens (British School at Athens and Finnish Institute at Athens) and Aix en Provence. He is appointed Assistant Editor of the periodical “Numismatica e Antichita’ Classiche. QuaderniTicinesi”.
1996-7: he wins a fellowship of the British Academy and becomes also a visiting research fellow of the Department of Classics of the King’s College, University of London. He obtains fellowships also from the Leventis Foundation as well as from the Hellenic Foundation. He becomes also a member of the Project Daidalos on ancient sculptors, established by G. B. Waywell. He gives seminars in the Institute of Classical Studies of the University of London.
1997-8: he has a Visiting Fellowship from the Institute of Classical Studies of London and a Senior Fellowship from the Onassis Foundation. He obtains also a second Leventis Fellowship. He lectures at London, Padua, Formia (on Vitruvian topics) and Paros. He publishes his edition of Vitruvius as well as an article on Vitruvian topics in the “Annual of the British School at Athens”.
1998-9: he wins the Senior Prize for the best recent publication on Vitruvius. He is resident at Athens, with a Fellowship for Further Advancement of the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece and with a second Onassis Grant. He works predominantly on Roman copies.
1999-2000: he lectures on “Transformations of the idea of ancient Greek classical art in late antiquity” in the University of Tbilisi in Georgia. Then, he moves to London, with a fellowship from the Seven Pillars of Wisdom Trust. He lectures on Roman Copies for the Psaropoulou Foundation at Athens.
2000-1: he wins a Senior Fellowship of the Collegium Budapest – Institute for Advanced Study, moving his residence to Budapest. He lectures at Budapest, in the Collegium Budapest, on the notion of dead arts in Roman times. He has again a Visiting Fellowship of the Institute of Classical Studies of the University of London.
Fall of 2001: he collaborates to an exhibition opened in Rome on the Giustinani collection of sculptures. He wins a third fellowship of the Leventis Foundation.
2002: he collaborates with the Foundation for a better Hellenism (Idryma Meizonos Hellenismou), contributing entries to the Encyclopedia of the Hellenism in Asia Minor, prepared by this Foundation. He wins a grant of the Centre of Studies of Parus and the Cyclades, in order to study sculpture of Parus of the classical period. He gives a paper on Cephisodotus the Elder and his triad at Megalopolis in the Arcadian Congress promoted by the Norvegian Institute at Athens and another on Xenocrates and early Hellenistic Art Criticism, in the congress on Early Hellenistic Portraiture held in the German Archaeological Institute at Athens.
2003: Visiting Professor in the Russian State Moscow University for the Humanities, where he lectures on ancient art criticism and on the myth of the greatness of Rome in the Middle Age.
2004: holder of research grants of the Leventis Foundation, of the 1984 Foundation (Mellon Bank, Philadelphia) and of the Marks Charitable Trust (London), the latter having been channeled through the Danish Institute of Athens. He gives a paper on ancient portraits of Archilochus in the context of the congress on Archilochus promoted by the Duke University on 1-2 October, 2004.
2005: holder of the Lerici Fellowship, he researches and studies in Stockholm. He delivers two lectures at St. Petersburg: in the “Bibliotheca Classica”, on 18 October, on ancient portraits of Archilochus; in the “Ermitage”, on 19 October, on the artistic development of Praxiteles.
2005-6: holder of a second research grant of the Marks Charitable Trust (London),channelled through the Benaki Museum of Athens.
2006: he delivers a lecture on the impact of the Antalcidas peace on Greek Art at Padua, for the local branch of the Italian Association of Classical Culture, on 26. January.
2006-7: holder of a third research grant of the Marks Charitable Trust and of another one of the Kostopoulos Foundation.
2006, October: he lectures at St. Petersburg (Bibliotheca Classica and University) on topics concerning late classical art.
2007, March: he delivers a lecture on the relationship between masters and pupils in workshops of ancient Greek sculptors in the University of Pavia.
2007-8: holder of a second grant of the 1984 Foundation of the Mellon Fellowship of Philadelphia. On 20. June, 2007, he delivers a paper on Praxiteles in the Sankt Petersburg congress of 18-20 June. He is awarded a fourth research grant of the Marks Charitable Trust. On 23. October, he delivers a lecture on the relations between masters and pupils in workshops of Greek sculptors in the Bibliotheca Classica of Sankt Petersburg.
2008: holder of a grant from the Museum of Fine Arts of Cleveland (Ohio, USA). On 13 June he delivers a lecture in the University of Athens on the topic of the superiority of contemporary visual arts when compared to Greek classical ones from the Carmina Priapeato Photius. In August, he gets a contract from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.
On 22. September he delivers a lecture on the career of Praxiteles at the Danish Institute at Athens.
On 16 February 2009 he wins the third grant of the 1984 Foundation, Philadelphia.
On 16 April, 2009 his contract with the ScuolaNormaleSuperiore di Pisa is extended.
On 22 June, 2009 he delivers a paper in the congress of the Academy of Sciences of Sankt Petersburg on anti-classicism in the taste of Roman and early Byzantine poets and writers.
